Occupational Therapy
Supporting independence & quality of life through tailored occupational therapy & support
At Altaira Allied Health, our Occupational Therapists are dedicated to helping clients maintain independence in their daily lives. We focus on understanding what’s meaningful to each individual, identifying barriers, and creating personalised strategies that support their ability to live safely, confidently, and independently.
Whether at home, in aged care, or in the community, our Occupational Therapy team is here to empower people to perform the activities that matter most to them — from dressing and cooking to gardening and managing medications.
How We Help - Occupational Therapy
Our Occupational Therapists support clients by providing:
- Comprehensive assessments to understand abilities, environments, and challenges
- Assistive equipment recommendations to enhance function and comfort
- Education for clients and carers to support confidence and understanding
- Home modification advice to promote safety and prevent falls
- Ongoing support and collaboration to help clients meet their personal goals

Enhancing Home Safety & Falls Prevention
We conduct home safety assessments to identify risks such as clutter, poor lighting, or uneven flooring. Based on each client’s strengths and needs, we provide tailored recommendations, including:
- Grab rails
- Ramps
- Platform steps
- Magnetic door catches
We also educate families and carers on recognising and reducing fall risks.
Pressure Care & Pain Management
Our Occupational Therapists assess for chronic pain and pressure injury risks, recommending strategies and equipment such as:
- Pressure-relief cushions
- Supportive mattresses
- Adjustable chairs
We also offer education to help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

Complex Seating Arrangements
We work closely with seating and equipment providers to find the right solution for each client’s posture, comfort, and mobility needs. This may include:
- Manual or electric wheelchairs
- High-back day chairs
- Recliners
All customised to promote safety, comfort, and dignity.
Why Choose Occupational Therapy at Altaira?
"Occupational Therapy is about enabling people to do the things that matter most — despite physical or cognitive challenges."
Our therapists consider the whole person — their physical, emotional, and environmental context — to provide solutions that are realistic, empowering, and aligned with personal goals.
Promoting Independence in Daily Living
We assess a person’s ability to perform daily activities like dressing, grooming, and toileting, then provide tools and techniques to:
- Improve or maintain skills
- Use adaptive strategies
- Recommend aids like modified utensils, dressing sticks, and dementia clocks
Our goal is to help clients live independently in their own home for as long as possible.

Helping Clients Achieve Their Goals
Our client-centred approach includes:
- Understanding what’s meaningful to the client
- Identifying barriers to independence
- Recognising strengths and available supports
- Setting SMART goals with clear timelines
- Creating a tailored action plan
- Regular follow-up and progress evaluation
Client Success Story
One of the most rewarding moments was supporting a client in aged care who had experienced a TIA and was living with Parkinson’s. When we first met, she required a lifter to transfer. After 8 weeks of intensive OT input, she was walking independently with her 4-wheeled walker to the garden, picking flowers and returning to her room with supervision. That’s what OT is all about.

How Occupational Therapy helps
Older adults and people with disability often face multiple physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges. Our OTs:
- Assess functional and mental capacity
- Recommend assistive devices and home modifications
- Offer strategies to overcome limitations
All with a focus on safety, wellbeing, and dignity.
Our Approach
- Comprehensive assessments tailored to each individual
- Identifying meaningful goals and clinical needs
- Understanding barriers to independence
- Collaborative, client-focused care planning
- Providing clear, clinically backed recommendations
- Empowering clients to participate in all decisions
