Dry Needling
Experience the benefits of dry needling
Dry needling physical therapy is a technique which draws inspiration from Eastern medicine, more specifically, Chinese acupuncture. It is a more focused and scientific procedure which aims to create microtrauma to injured tissues, thus increasing blood flow to the area for healing.
Trigger points
Myofascial trigger points are areas of tight muscle fibres which can either form in the muscle belly over time (chronically), or soon after an injury (acute). These trigger points can be released by direct targeting with dry needling or via deep tissue trigger point release from your physiotherapist.
Does dry needling hurt?
There is usually only mild pain with dry needling, however this can differ from person to person dependent on how strong a reactor you are. You will feel an initial prick as the needling begins, similar to an ant bite, and then you may feel a dull sensation deep in the muscle or miniature electric impulse feelings if myofascial trigger points are reached.
Some patients may initially feel worse before getting better. This is generally a sign that healing has begun, and the desired affect has been achieved. If symptoms continue to worsen, or last for more than two days contact your physiotherapist.
Holistic care and informed consent
Dry needling should be used as part of a holistic treatment plan, along with other more active rehabilitation as part of an overall management approach. It is very rarely a standalone approach, and it’s use as a treatment will be thoroughly explained in a client-centred collaborative approach to treatment.
Your physio will run through the following as part of an informed consent process prior to commencing dry needling:
- benefits
- potential side effects
- contraindications and precautions (e.g. pregnancy, diabetics, bleeding disorders, etc.)
- alternative treatment options
