Strength Classes FAQ

1What funding options are available in SA?
Funding Pathways for Exercise Physiology in South Australia

There are three primary funding pathways available in SA for people living with diabetes to access exercise physiology. Depending on your specific condition (Type 1 or Type 2) and eligibility, these can range from subsidised sessions to fully funded (free) programs.

1. Medicare: Group Services (Type 2 Diabetes Specific)
• What you get: Up to 8 free group exercise sessions per calendar year, plus 1 individual assessment session.
• Eligibility: You must have Type 2 Diabetes.
• How to access: You need a GP referral called Referral for Group Allied Health Services under Medicare for patients with Type 2 diabetes.

2. Medicare: Chronic Disease Management Plan (Individual)
• What you get: Up to 5 individual allied health services per calendar year (usable for Exercise Physiology assessments or reviews).
• Cost: Medicare rebate applies — you pay only the gap.
• Eligibility: Your GP must place you on a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan.
• How to access: Book a long appointment with your GP and request a CDM referral to an Exercise Physiologist.

3. Private Health
• Your rebate depends on your fund and level of cover.
• Contact your health fund to confirm if Exercise Physiology is included.
2Do I need to be fit before joining?
No. Your program starts based on your current level and progresses safely over time. You don’t need to have any prior exercise experience to get started!
3What should I bring?
Comfortable clothing, closed shoes, and a water bottle
4Can I join if I have injuries or chronic conditions?
Yes. Your Exercise Physiologist will tailor your program to consider any limitations you may have because of your injury or medical condition. A review of your medical history will be completed during your Initial Assessment.
5Do I need a referral?
Only if you plan to use Medicare funding. Otherwise, you can book directly.
6Is the class suitable for people over 70?
Absolutely. The program adapts to all ages and abilities.
7But I don’t have diabetes, is this class still suitable for me?
Definitely! While having Diabetes can give you access to some Medicare rebates, anyone is able to join the class and it is not just for diabetics. As mentioned above, depending on your level of cover you may have private health rebates for exercise physiology classes
