Your Wellbeing during 2024!
We sat down with Altaira’s leading physiotherapist, Michael Zoumaras, to ask about how to kickstart your well-being in 2024. Discover his insights on approaching health goals, staying injury-free, and how Altaira can be your ally in achieving those New Year’s resolutions.
1. How should people typically approach their overall health and fitness goals in the new year?
“New year often brings around New Year’s resolutions and people wanting to get fit and healthy. Best way to approach that is not necessarily go boom bust. You really think, geez, I haven’t been fit for a long time, so I really want to go out for a ten-kilometre run and maybe I haven’t done that for a long time. And that’s actually going to set you back a little bit. You don’t want to be going boom, bust, boom, bust on the long term. You do go downhill. A lot of injuries do occur from doing too much too soon after doing too little for too long. So it’s good to have those goals. But I would recommend that people pace towards those goals slowly. Incremental changes are going to be more long lasting and effective. Altaira can assist with your New Year’s resolutions, particularly with the fitness and strength and conditioning basis. Our physiotherapists will issue to identify what goals you want to achieve, whether that might be returning to sport, returning to physical activity, we can tailor a program that is specific and individualised to yourself to make sure that you do get the best results and are able to keep fit and healthy.”
2. What are you most looking forward to during 2024 in Allied Health?
“In 2024, Altaira Allied Health are most looking forward to continuing to grow and diversify our workforce. I take pride in the fact that a lot of our staff do have exposure to a lot of different fields of physiotherapy, whether or not they’re working here in the clinic, they’re going out in the community helping out with aged care shifts as well, that bit of variety is good on a personal level, I feel, and it’s also good on a professional level to help build that repertoire of skills.”
3. What was the most frequent condition you treated in 2023 and why is that?
“The most frequent condition we treated last year would have been shoulder injuries. They are an injury that tends to happen across the age spectrum. It is something that can happen as we age, but also when people are younger, particularly in their working life, whether that be being on their screens a lot with their phones or their laptop. Basically, everything we’re doing is very forward facing. That also has an impact on the neck and back, which kind of feed back into the shoulder and the rotator cuff. So we did treat a lot of that, treated it fairly well. We got some good results. A lot of the time, we do like to promote a lot of self-management. While we do do our hands on therapy and promoting self-management always does get long term results.”
4. What are some of the factors that people should for in seeking a physiotherapy provider in 2024?
“The factors people should look for in seeking a physiotherapy provider I suppose, is integrity and someone that’s going to give you ownership of your own health concerns or your own musculoskeletal concerns. In terms of physiotherapy, so yes, that you’re going to get some hands-on treatment and that will help to a certain extent, but the best ones will give you management strategies to try to deal with the pain yourself and to try to prevent it from occurring again.”
